MOD buys a wide variety of products and services ranging from clothing to satellite communication systems and from construction of buildings to gardening equipment.

MOD is British industry’s largest single customer.  Approx 19.4% of both direct of indirect spend is with SME’s, which equates to £4b.  £822m of direct spend is with 5,400 different suppliers.  The MOD has committed to increasing the spend with SME’s to 25% by 2020.

Defence Suppliers’ Service (DSS)

The Defence Suppliers’ Service (DSS), part of the Supplier Relations Team, is the MOD focal point for the provision of advice and guidance to companies (often SME’s) that are interested in becoming suppliers to defence.

As well as providing a help desk facility, as part of its ‘outreach’ service, DSS staff attend various exhibitions, seminars and ‘Meet the Buyer’ events across the UK where they can provide advice and guidance to prospective defence suppliers. They also give ‘Selling to the MOD’ presentations on the various procedures and the processes that the MOD uses to buy a wide variety of goods and services and how and where to access MOD tender and contract opportunities.

The DSS works closely with the UKTI Defence & Security Organisation’s (DSO) Small Business Unit, Trade Associations, Chambers of Commerce, Local Enterprise Partnerships and councils and receives and responds to around 1,000 selling to the MOD enquiries each year, most of which are from SME’s.
