The international trade grants encourage SMEs to overcome the barriers to trading internationally by providing match funding for ‘internationalisation tools’. The following list provides examples of the types of activities that could be supported by the grants programme:

• language and cultural training;
• legal advice around international commercial agreements;
• assistance with international marketing and branding, including website internationalisation (excluding online payment capability) and marketing materials;
• attendance at overseas conferences;
• advice relating to international commerce and e-commerce protocols;
• specialist support with IP protection and prototyping for overseas markets;
• market research projects for new overseas market entry

Grants are awarded at a 50% intervention rate.  The minimum grant value is currently £1,000 based on a minimum beneficiary project spend of £2,000. The maximum grant value is variable and subject to discussion between the International Trade Adviser and the beneficiary. Please note however, that the maximum value is currently capped at £1,250 for businesses based in the LLEP area.

Application Process

In order to access the financial support available, companies must be working with an International Trade Advisers, who will undertake a review with the company to establish their overseas trading capabilities and, if required, will signpost them to the grant support available.

An application form is completed online via a web based portal. Beneficiaries are required to discuss their proposed project with their ITA. An outline application is submitted by the ITA. Subject to outline application approval being granted, an email is sent to the beneficiary with a link to the online application portal in order to enable them to complete and submit their application for grant funding.  All applications must be accompanied by a minimum of 3 quotations for each item or service that the beneficiary would like to purchase via their grant.

Closing date for applications is 31 March 2018 (subject to funding remaining available).

Any companies who are interested in the grant funding available via the Internationalising SMEs Project should contact DIT on 0345 0524001 to arrange an appointment with an ITA.
